SOLD-OUT - Rock movie club - Stephen, the King (1984)
István, a Király (Stephen the King) premiered August 1983 at the Városliget, is without doubt a landmark in Hungarian music history. It was an enormous success on record, in film, in print and on stage. More than 100,000 people saw the King-on the hill, and the film about him was seen by one million. The double album of the musical became Hungaroton's best-selling disc. Thanks to Levente Szörényi and János Bródy a national rock opera was born.

Contemporary Hungarian film and (rock) music have been in contact practically since the late 1960s. Sometimes more intensively, sometimes more loosely, but they are essentially inseparable. Before the screenings, Béla Szilárd Jávorszky will talk briefly about the genesis and pop-historical significance of these works, followed by a discussion with a guest film aesthetics expert on the relevant domestic and international trends.
