After the Anglo-Saxon musical films of 2025 and the Hungarian documentaries of spring 2026, international productions once again feature in the Rock Film Club’s autumn 2026 programme. Alongside Leto/Summer (2018), which presents the Soviet underground rock music of the 1980s and the rebellious world of the Leningrad rock clubs, two films connected to the Freddie exhibition on view at the House of Music Hungary until the end of 2026 will be screened: Flash Gordon (1980) and Highlander (1986), both scored by Queen, whose music was also released as a standalone album at the time. After the screenings, Dénes Varga will talk with Béla Szilárd Jávorszky, professional staff member of the Pop Cultural Club Library.
The 1980 space opera superhero film (directed by Mike Hodges) follows star football champion Flash Gordon and his allies as they unite the warring factions of the planet Mongo against the oppression of Ming the Merciless, who seeks to destroy Earth. Producer Dino De Laurentiis had wanted for years to bring the comic of the same name to the screen, but was unable to settle on a director (he rejected an offer from George Lucas, who at that time was starting work on the Star Wars series), and matters were further complicated when Sam J. Jones, who played the title role in the nearly two-hour feature, left the production before filming was completed due to a dispute with the producer, so most of his dialogue was dubbed by someone else. But the film Flash Gordon was eventually completed, became a box-office hit in Great Britain, and what’s more, a significant cult has developed around it since. Its music was composed by Freddie Mercury and Queen, and EMI released it in December 1980 as a standalone LP.
