Winterreise, D. 911

This programme is held in Hungarian.

Franz Schubert’s Winterreise, a monumental song cycle, ranks among the absolute pinnacles of European culture. This time, we will have the opportunity to experience it in an unconventional way, performed by Emőke Baráth and Anastasia Razvaljajeva: Schubert originally wrote the cycle for male voice and piano, but here we will hear a female voice, while the harp takes the place of the piano accompaniment. Yet it is precisely this new sound that reveals how universal Schubert’s themes are. The protagonist of the song cycle is constantly on the move, but this journey leads increasingly inward: the outer landscape gradually becomes an inner world of memory and the unconscious.

At the House of Music Hungary, this journey will now be something we can not only hear, but see as well. Eszter Novák’s direction and the visuals do not merely seek to illustrate Schubert’s music, but to add another dimension, another layer: a dreamlike inner landscape where memories of the past and present-day experiences, reality and the subconscious, continually merge into one another. Wandering, loss, memory, loneliness and confronting ourselves remain just as much a part of our lives today—perhaps it is precisely their psychological complexity that allows these songs to feel so close to us even after two hundred years.
