KODE9
Kode9, otherwise known as Scottish DJ, producer and writer Steve Goodman, founded what would quickly be soon become the pivotal world-famous record label Hyperdub (its first signed artist was Burial) in 2004 before going on to establish the sub-label Flatlines to provide a home for his audio essays in 2019. He has released four albums, including two with the poet and MC The Spaceape (Memories of the Future - 2006 and Black Sun - 2010), who passed away in 2014, and a solo album, Nothing (2015). His latest work Escapology (2022), featured the audio material for Astro-Darien, a work of fiction which, through the genre of speculative sci-fi, saw Goodman exploring the possibility of the collapse of the United Kingdom after Brexit and the eventual emergence of an independent Scotland. He has also featured on Dubstep Allstars Vol. 3 (Tempa, 2006), and mixes from DJ Kicks (K7, 2011), Rinse 22 (Rinse, 2013) and the 2018 Fabric 100, together with Burial. In addition to Hyperdub, Goodman has also released music under Aphex Twin's label, Rephlex, not to mention Soul Jazz and Rinse, and has remixed the songs of Lee Scratch Perry, Battles and Dabrye/MF Doom.

His book Sonic Warfare was published by MIT Press in 2010, while he also edited the volume of essays Unsound: Undead (Urbanomic Press, 2019) in collaboration with AUDINT. His audio installations have been displayed at the Tate Modern (2018) and the Barbican Centre. As a pivotal figure on the British dubstep scene, the work of Kode9 has significantly influenced the sound and evolution of modern bass music. His earliest work and Hyperdub releases established the genre’s dark, austere, and urban yet simultaneously Zen aesthetic. He is equally inspired by jungle, footwork and UK garage, and frequently elaborates on themes of urban decay, isolation and social inequality. In addition to his work as a producer, Kode9 is also an acclaimed author and cultural theorist, and has made an active contribution to global music and political discourse through his writing and performances.  His diverse array of work forms a bridge between the underground and academic culture.
