Ennio (2021)

Ennio Morricone is a 2021 documentary about the film score composer, who passed away at the age of 91 in the summer of 2020. Its director is Giuseppe Tornatore, who also made the Oscar-winning Cinema Paradiso. That film was the first occasion Tornatore worked alongside the maestro, and they continued their partnership for 12 more films. With a working relationship spanning nearly three decades and experience in making several other documentaries, it made perfect sense for Tornatore to produce this 156-minute biographical tribute.

The film guides us from the legendary music with Sergio Leone to the Hateful Eight, when Quentin Tarantino not only employed the composer for the first time, but also brought an Oscar for the Italian icon, who had previously received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy. The documentary offers an insight into Morricone’s world tours, with stories from the likes of Tarantino, Clint Eastwood, Oliver Stone, Hans Zimmer, Barry Levinson, Dario Argento, Quincy Jones, Bruce Springsteen and John Williams, in addition to the film’s director.
