PeruJazz (PER)
PeruJazz is one of the defining ensembles of contemporary Peruvian music. They played a pioneering role in fusing jazz with Peru’s coastal, Andean, and Amazonian musical traditions, thereby creating a distinctive musical language in which improvisation, heritage, and modernity meet naturally. Their sound world connects ancient instruments – such as the quena, the zampoña, and the cajón – with saxophone, electric bass guitar, drums, and contemporary musical textures. The result is a sophisticated, deeply rooted, yet unmistakably Peruvian musical expression.
Since the 1980s, Perujazz has been one of the representative exponents of Peruvian music and has secured a stable place in the international jazz and world music scene. The Afro-Peruvian rhythmic foundations, which almost compel movement, the melodies open to improvisation, the deep resonance of the cajón, the pulsating swing of the bass and drums, and the expressive power of the saxophone together create a sound that is at once contemporary, ancient, and unmistakably unique. Perujazz presents the contemporary face of Peru: ethnic roots intertwine with modern technique, and ancient tradition enters into dialogue with sophistication. Their music guides the listener through Peru’s diverse landscapes and reveals a sound world that represents the country of today — a nation with a cultural heritage spanning thousands of years, which, like the music of Perujazz, speaks in a universal language.
