Csinibaba (1996)
The last screening on the open-air stage at the House of Music this summer is of Péter Tímár’s retro film Dollybirds, which harks back to the early Sixties. The director uses relics from consolidating socialism (‘Skylark’ Radio, semolina noodles, ‘Bambi’ soft drinks and house radio) to conjure an era when Who Knows What? was still a huge crowd-pleasing event, the winners of which could travel to Helsinki and out beyond the Iron Curtain. It also recalls the famous but often kitsch hits of the era – reinterpreted by the performers in the 1990s.
