Pécs – The Modern Classic

The cultural diversity of Pécs is under the spotlight, and of course the rich musical and literary heritage of the city is also on display. This evening event will span the centuries and feature poems and compositions from authors past and present, some of which are connected to the city, while others reflect upon each other. The music will be provided by the Eozin String Quartet, comprised of soloists from the Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra, and two young talents who were born in Pécs, the soprano Ildikó Megyimórecz and the pianist Ádám Balogh, both winners of the Junior Prima Prize. In addition to the music, one of Hungary's best known contemporary writers, Lajos Parti Nagy, will read from his own poems, while works from Sándor Weöres, Győző Csorba and László Bertók will be performed by the actor Gergely Kocsis.

The concert opens with the final movement of the String Quartet in C minor by Johann Georg Lickl – or György Lickl in Hungarian – who lived at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. This will be followed by a selection of Zoltán Kodály's eleven-volume series of folk song arrangements. The final piece of the evening will be a composition entitled Reverb from 2011 by László Vidovszky – who celebrates his eightieth birthday this year.
