The Ligeti String Quartets - Accord Quartet
In 2023 it will be 100 years since the birth of the Kossuth Prize-winning Hungarian composer György Ligeti. The anniversary year will be marked by a series of events entitled Ligeti 100, beginning with this event at the House of Music Hungary. The Accord Quartet will play Ligeti's string quartets as the composer intended – complete with hair-raising bowing techniques.
Fourteen years passed between the first of Ligeti’s string quartets and the second. Given that, it is not surprising that there is a huge contrast between the two works: while the first, Nocturnal Metamorphoses, is a classic, extremely mature piece in the centuries-old tradition of the genre – after Kurtág, it is also known as Bartók's 7th String Quartet – the truly avant-garde second reveals Ligeti's incredible theoretical knowledge and experimental spirit.
In 2023, it will be one hundred years since the Kossuth Prize-winning Hungarian composer György Ligeti was born. The jubilee year is connected with a series of events called Ligeti 100, which starts with this event at the House of Hungarian Music.
