Our Mission
The House of Music Hungary considers it its mission to nurture the treasures of traditional, popular and classical music from both Hungary and around the world, to present them as experiences, and to seek out new formats and directions of music education via the means of entertainment. The House’s three pillars – exhibits, concerts, and music education – offer music-related programmes in an ever-expanding array of forms: with unique and unrepeatable concert experiences, fascinating exhibits, and interactive music presentations, they reinforce each other and make the programmes of the House of Music truly special for a wide audience open to discovery.
Almost ten years ago, we set ourselves the goal of creating a new institution capable of bringing as many visitors as possible closer to the world of music. The primary aim was to create a place catering not only to those already familiar with the subject of music, but also and even more so for a wider audience that is receptive to exploring music. A place that helps to showcase Hungarian talent and, by supporting musical collaborations, including international ones, musical encounters.
It was through this endeavour that the year 2023 saw the completion of an outstanding building – the result of an international design competition – that respects its surroundings while fostering a connection with them. One that supports the effort to provide visitors with a closer understanding of music in a slightly different and more complex way than usual. A building that offers an opportunity to try out a new kind of methodology for music pedagogy. That serves to involve the audience in the joy of making music and supports our effort to convey, in a slightly different way, how the musical history of Europe developed over the past several hundred years.
Providing the means to do all this are such – quite uncommon in Hungary – facilities as the interactive music exhibition spaces, the sound dome, the creative sound space, the studios, the multimedia library and the musical playground, along with the various auditoriums themselves. As part of the next phase, we are working to ensure that each of these exciting venues is filled with music. Our mission is summed up by our slogan: ‘Let’s play music!’ – because music is an enjoyable collaborative social activity in which anyone can directly participate, regardless of age. We consider it our task to nurture and present the treasures of Hungarian and international music in its folk, traditional, popular and – last but not least – classical forms. Our pedagogical programmes teach in an entertaining fashion by searching for new forms of musical education and facilitating synergetic encounters between compatible genres. The House of Music is therefore complex not only as a building, but also as an institution. While its remarkable exhibits and educational and concert programmes retain features familiar from museums, concert centres and schools, here the emphasis is not on discovering isolated works, but on their mutual influence on each other. The House of Music is a creative host facility, welcoming the involvement of other Hungarian music institutions into its activities. This makes it a source of harmony.
