Singing Togethet with Anna Sőregi

Singing together is a good thing – whether in the car with friends on a trip to Lake Balaton, singing our favorite tracks together at a concert, or singing happy birthday to a family member. Communal singing has a great charm, which is why we invited four wonderful female singers to introduce us to the intricacies of different genres. They will bring both well-known and lesser-known songs to acquaint us, through them, with the musical language of each style, and so that, under their guidance, we can perform the songs together.
On the third occasion of the series we invited Anna Sőregi to tell us about Hungarian folk songs. For her, one of the most exciting features of folk songs is that one melody can be associated with multiple texts, and vice versa – the same text can survive with different melodies. We will explore how a song is shaped during repetition or re-singing, what factors influence a singer's choice of text for a given melody, and how social and cultural changes have affected the song repertoire. But how does this work in practice? When and why does a song change? What role does the singer's personality, the community's taste, or social change play in this? Why do songs disappear, and how are new ones born; how does the rhythm of the text (prosody) fit the structure of the melody? We seek answers to these questions during the workshop, and by learning a few folk songs we will also try together how melody and text can be interchanged.
