The BDZ Chamber Workshop is an ensemble formed by the musicians of the Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra, which, thanks to its unique line-up, is able to present well-known works in a distinctive, innovative instrumentation. On this occasion, Béla Bartók’s masterpiece, Bluebeard’s Castle, will be dressed in new garb by them: from the orchestral material of the famous mystery play, Apor Szüts, the ensemble’s artistic director, has prepared an arrangement that simultaneously embodies the intimacy of chamber music and the grandeur of symphonic sound. Two outstanding vocal soloists take part in the performance of the piece: in the title role we will hear Krisztián Cser, and in the role of Judit, Viktória Mester. The opera’s iconic locations – the Torture Chamber, the Treasury, the Empire, and the others – will be brought to life through special lighting effects.
Krisztián Cser was born in Szeged into a family of musicians. He studied at the University of Szeged, majoring in solo voice, where his vocal coach was István Andrejcsik, then continued his studies at the Opera Department of the Liszt Academy under Éva Marton. Over the years, his portrayal of the title role in Bluebeard’s Castle has become emblematic, including the first Chinese performance of Bartók’s work in 2013, then in Rouen at the Festival d’Automne en Normandie, and in 2019 at Carnegie Hall in New York; and on the CD released in 2018 for the 100th anniversary of the work, it is also he whom we can hear. In 2025, he once again sang the role of Bluebeard at several European venues, including Müpa, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and Bucharest, together with the Budapest Festival Orchestra.
Viktória Mester was born in Mezőtúr and began her vocal studies at the Béla Bartók Secondary School of Music in Békéscsaba. In 1996 she was admitted to Mária Toldy’s musical studio, where her vocal coach was Judit Kővári. A year later she joined the Choir of the Hungarian Radio, and then the Hungarian National Choir, where she worked under such outstanding conductors as Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi, Zoltán Kocsis and György Solti. In 1998 she was admitted to the Liszt Academy, where her teachers were Éva Andor and Balázs Kovalik. For four seasons she was a regular guest of the National Theatre of Miskolc, singing, among others, the title role in Carmen and Nicklausse in The Tales of Hoffmann. She made her debut at the Hungarian State Opera in October 2006 as Maddalena in Rigoletto.
