October 2025 will mark 35 years since Leonard Bernstein "laid down the baton". His work as a composer is characterised by a synthesis of American music, with West Side Story, the American version of Romeo and Juliet, or Tony and Maria, being a significant landmark in many ways. He has been a conductor, music educator, promoter of classical masters and a fusion of Latin jazz and classical music. In 90 minutes, a life story and a genre take centre stage: the musical.
The Zenei műszótár series aims to explore the characteristics of popular musical genres and examine where they have developed from and to over the centuries. The genres examined so far have been the suite, the concerto, the ballet and the oratorio. Now we turn to a genre that is quintessentially American: the musical. The genre's biggest success, both on stage and in film, was Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story.
A somewhat unusual and jubilee performance is in store, as on 14 October we can remember the "Maestro", who laid down the conductor's baton 35 years ago. He is a multiple Grammy, Emmy and Tony Award-winning composer, conductor and pianist. A music educator with a mass appeal, his popular music series, Concerto for Youth, has been seen by millions. Musicals are perhaps the youngest musical genre, but Bernstein's work is not limited to the classics; he is the composer of countless stage works, and was well versed in classical music and jazz, which he combined in his own works. The film version of West Side Story is the musical that has won the most Academy Awards. Genre specificity, popular pieces and Leonard Bernstein will be the focus of this afternoon. The good mood and interesting stories will be provided by Dóra Tápai, choirmaster, secondary school singing and music teacher at the House of Music.
Our series Hangadó Senior is especially aimed at older participants, but of course we welcome anyone who is interested. The aim of the series is to act as a club and to playfully tell a chapter of music history in an hour-long interactive journey through time.
