Nilüfer Yanya (UK) | Flanger Kids

Selected Sounds and the House of Music Hungary present: Nilüfer Yanya in concert. The English singer-songwriter-guitarist Nilüfer Yanya has been one of the most popular artists to emerge in recent years. Her diverse music is based on indie- and art-rock, but her songs are seasoned with hints of electronic music, jazz pop and soulful R&B. Her eclectic debut album was one of the big surprises of 2019, and with this year’s album PAINLESS she has achieved a similarly high standard. She is appearing for the first time in Hungary at the House of Music in Budapest as part of her 2022 European tour of the album – and we will also get a chance to see and hear the Hungarian band the Flanger Kids.

With her mixed Turkish-Irish-Barbadian roots, Nilüfer Yanya does not strictly confine herself to any genre, and her debut album Miss Universe, released three years ago, was kaleidoscopic in the extreme. Its diverse, rule-breaking songs are characteristically her own. With her first album woven around the theme of wholeness – a mocking approach to the health and wellness industry – she quickly attracted a large fan base from among the general public and critics alike. She continued to grow in popularity as a touring partner of The xx, Mitski, Sharon Van Etten and, after her early EP, she followed up with an even shorter format in 2020. Then, after releasing three songs on Feeling Lucky? PAINLESS, her second full-length album, has come out this year. A child of artist parents, she has now placed emotional vulnerability at the heart of her songs. This more organically produced album is composed of more cohesive recordings with alt-rock influences coupled with hip-hop and drum and bass inspirations, creating compositions that flash a broad emotional spectrum with openness and honesty. At the forefront of international pop music, Nilüfer Yanya is one of the most highly rated artists, and we will catch a glimpse of her at her best – a concert not to be missed!

The first half of the evening will feature the Hungarian duo Flanger Kids (Panka Szczuka and Fanny Gyarmati), who will expand their number to a live quartet. Eclecticism is also an element in the music of this duo, who perform vocal electronica in many different ways: synthpop, jazzy arrangements and lo-fi [low fidelity] grooves characterise their sound.
