IN PARI – Words and Music #5

This programme is held in Hungarian.

IN PARI is a series in which music is paired with different art forms – in pairs, equally, as the series title suggests. This time, the evening is about the connection between music and lyrics. The texts of poet and slammer Márton Simon are paired with the music of double bassist Péter Ajtai and violist Áron Porteleki – an intense, fast-paced, surprising and exciting show is to be expected. As is customary in the IN PARI series, the performers prepare for improvisation and react to each other's performances. The dramaturgy of the evening is shaped by the back-and-forth effect, and by the end of the production, we will have the impression that the genres were on equal footing, rather than in a subordinate relationship. The curator of the IN PARI series is Albert Márkos.

Márton Simon
Márton Simon is one of the most exciting and creative authors in contemporary Hungarian literature and a defining figure of the middle generation. A slammer, performer, and poet, he has been following his own path from the beginning and now has thousands of followers and readers. His four published volumes have been deservedly successful, and it is no coincidence that they have achieved unusually high sales figures for poetry collections today. He has been publishing poems since 2004 and has been a regular performer at slam poetry events for ten years. He has produced an experimental spoken word album and completed a master's degree in Japanese studies.

Péter Ajtai
Péter Ajtai, double bass player and music aesthetician, was born on May 4, 1986, in Budapest. He is a member of the jazz generation "that rejects conventions while respecting traditions and playing at the highest technical level. He is one of the most influential figures on the Hungarian avant-garde music scene." During his musical career to date, he has worked with such luminaries of Hungarian jazz and improvisational music as Mihály Dresch, Tamás Geröly, István Baló, István Grencsó, Ákos Szelevényi, as well as foreign musicians such as Hamid Drake and Alexander von Schlippenbach, among others. He is the bandleader of Qiyan, Mingus! Mingus! Mingus! and Peter Problem, a founding member of the Budapest Improvisers Orchestra, and the double bassist for dozens of bands. In 2020, he was named best jazz bassist (shared) by the editors of Jazzma.hu.

Áron Porteleki
Áron Porteleki is a drummer and viola player, and one of the key figures of the Budapest free music and experimental scene. He has creatively incorporated his folk music roots into numerous formations and is known for his genre-spanning musical approach. In addition to actively performing, he is also the composer of internationally acclaimed contemporary dance pieces.
