Festival Academy Budapest presents: Stravinsky - The Soldier's Story, Vivaldi - Four Seasons
Festival Academy’s concert showcases the interconnected nature of music and literature through two epoch-making compositions. Igor Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale "to be read, played and danced" is staged based on a unique concept and with a singular cast. Tamás Ascher directs the production, Piroska Molnár acts as the narrator, and we can enjoy the performances of Zoltán Bezerédi, Attila Vidnyánszky Jr and Hanna Kelemen in the various roles. The Faust-like story of the soldier entering into a pact with the devil is scored for a reduced ensemble due to the meagre means of the First World War: the most characteristic members of the various instrumental groups are represented by a septet of violin, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, cornet (often played on trumpet), trombone, and percussion.
Vivaldi got his cycle The Four Seasons published within a collection of concertos titled The Contest Between Harmony and Invention in 1725. He also penned four sonnets to accompany each violin concerto, which he then translated directly into the music on the page. The composer dedicated the entire cycle to the Bohemian Count, Václav Morzin. In his dedicatory epistle, he writes ″Pray do not be surprised if, among these few and feeble concertos, Your Most Illustrious Lordship finds the Four Seasons which have so long enjoyed the indulgence of Your Most Illustrious Lordship's kind generosity, but believe that I have considered it fitting to print them because, while they may be the same, I have added to them, besides the sonnets, a very clear statement of all things that unfold in them, so that I am sure that they will appear new to you."
