Discantus: Prophecies and the Gospel
Discantus: Prophecies and the Gospel
This programme is held in Hungarian.
Countless prophecies in the books of the Old Testament in the Bible foreshadow the life and deeds of Jesus, and the circumstances of his death. This in itself is a mystery. It becomes even more of a mystery when choral works written to texts of the prophecies directly connect with Arvo Pärt’s compositions presenting us the evangelical events confirming the fulfilment of those prophecies. Complementing elements of choral theatre make for a comprehensive musical-mystical experience. Prophecies and Gospel, a choral-theatrical work by the Discantus Vocal Ensemble, takes an unconventional approach to the oeuvre of the composer, celebrating his 90th birthday this year. In dialogue with the music of other composers and other periods, accompanied by simple gestures and movements, Pärt’s sacred music comes to life in a new way, opening up new layers of interpretation and experience for the listener.
Arvo Pärt, one of the most popular composers of our time, will celebrate his 90th birthday in autumn 2025, and the House of Music will commemorate the occasion with two very special programmes: On 9 October, the artists of the Era Nova Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of conductors Péter Kemény and Gergely Gulyás, will lead the audience through the stages of the composer's oeuvre, which will be rounded off by a live animation by Estonian graphic artist Joonas Sildre; and on 16 October, the Discantus Choral Ensemble will present a choral theatre performance of Prophecies and Gospel, based on Arvo Pärt's vocal works.
