After the 2025 Anglo-American music films and the Hungarian documentaries of spring 2026, international productions are once again featured in the Rockfilm Club’s autumn 2026 lineup. Alongside Leto/Summer (2018), which depicts the Soviet underground rock scene of the 1980s and the rebellious world of Leningrad’s rock clubs, two films linked to the Freddie exhibition on view at the House of Music until the end of 2026 will be screened: Flash Gordon (1980) and Highlander (1986), whose music was written by Queen and released at the time as a standalone album. After the screenings, Béla Szilárd Jávorszky, professional staff member of the Pop Culture Club Library, will talk with a film scholar.
Highlander (original title: Highlander), released in 1986 and starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, is an American adventure fantasy film that was a huge success in its day. Its featured song, “Princes of the Universe,” sung by Freddie Mercury, remains a popular hit to this day. Two film series and an animated series were later made based on it. No official soundtrack album was released for the film at the time, but Queen released one (A Kind of Magic), whose title comes from a line spoken by Christopher Lambert and which is closely connected to the film in countless ways. Six of the nine songs on the Queen album appeared in the film (though mostly in different versions), including the closing song, “Princes of the Universe.” And it was in connection with this film that the rock band embarked on its 26-date tour—which included a stop at Budapest’s Népstadion on July 27, 1986—and which, as it later turned out, was their last.
