Two Leos, two romantic souls among modern composers, two different life paths from 19th- and 20th-century Central and Eastern Europe, and, last but not least, two searing romantic disappointments, both of which found expression in the form of a string quartet: at the themed concert presented by the Anima Musicae Chamber Orchestra, we can gain parallel insight into the emotional worlds of Leoš Janáček and Leó Weiner. In one of his final works, his Second Quartet, composed in 1928 and subtitled “Intimate Letters,” Janáček portrays—in a musical language far ahead of its time—his almost maddening attraction to Kamila Stösslová, a married woman thirty-seven years his junior. Leó Weiner’s String Quartet in E-flat major, by contrast, is among his youthful works, written when the young composer was going through a severe emotional trauma: Mária Hacker, his fellow piano student, rejected Weiner’s ardent feelings, as their extensive correspondence attests. The completed work was “compensation for the passions endured,” and earned resounding professional acclaim. Both quartets will be performed by the orchestra in string-orchestra arrangements, with an expanded sound that may bring their passion even further to the fore. The program is complemented by excerpts from the letters between Janáček and Stösslová and between Weiner and Hacker, giving us a fuller picture of these two defining personal stories from the music of the last century.
Founded in 2010, the Junior Prima and Artisjus Award-winning Anima Musicae Chamber Orchestra is one of Hungary’s most exciting ensembles, a prizewinner at numerous international competitions and a regular performer at prestigious concert venues in Hungary and across Europe. Its appearances have included the stages of Vienna’s Musikverein, Berlin’s Philharmonie and Leipzig’s Gewandhaus, and for years it has also presented its own concert series at the Liszt Academy and Nádor Hall. Most recently, it gave a sold-out concert at the House of Music Hungary in January 2025.
