This programme is held in Hungarian.
In 2022, a regular monthly program was launched at the MZH Multimedia Library and Club under the title: Rock and Roll Free University. The Rock and Roll Free University presents the most important processes and performers in international pop history. It is based on the idea that rock and roll, somewhat simplified, is the result of a unique cultural-historical union: when the musical traditions of black slaves brought from Africa (blues) and white settlers who emigrated from Europe (country) met and continuously blended with each other on a third continent, in America. Moreover, all this took place in a radically transforming society, following technical development and the associated industrialization and urbanization. In the tenth season of this series (autumn 2026) we will focus on the glam rock that blossomed in the United Kingdom (David Bowie, Queen, Slade, Roxy Music) and its American representatives (Alice Cooper, Kiss).
The glam rock fashion trend, which was born in opposition to the hippies and hard rock/heavy metal, was represented by musically quite heterogeneous artists – in addition to the previously presented David Bowie and Queen, there were Roxy Music, Slade, Gary Glitter, and Sweet – who, instead of everyday reality, created a theatrical and narcissistic dream world. Of course, they also had American followers, first and foremost Alice Cooper and Kiss.
Dear Visitor, We kindly inform you that during the event, photographs, audio recordings, and/or video recordings may be taken. By attending the event, you consent to the recording of such materials through your implied conduct.
Rock and roll is, somewhat simplistically, the result of a particular cultural-historical fusion: that of when the musical traditions of Black slaves brought over from Africa met those of white settlers who had emigrated from Europe to the new world, the Americas. Moreover, all this took place in a radically transforming society, following technological progress and its associated industrialisation and urbanisation. In the second season of this series, we look at the social, cultural and musical events of the period from Elvis to the twilight of the rock and roll era in the Fifties.
