Guitarist Pedro de Dios had already often flirted with the sound world of flamenco on the albums of his excellent blues band, Guadalupe Plata. Fate, however, brought him the opportunity to immerse himself even more deeply in this musical world. Granada singer Antonio Fernández was in the middle of recording his new album when his guitarist unexpectedly dropped out of the studio work. At that point their producer, José Sánchez, called one of his neighbors, Pedro de Dios, to step in as a substitute. At first, Pedro approached the task with great respect and caution, but in the end he accepted the challenge. During their improvised collaboration, chemistry instantly developed between them, and they both came to the same realization: they had to make a joint album that would merge their musical worlds. Paying tribute to the figures of classic flamenco – such as La Niña de los Peines – they drew inspiration from dark flamenco forms like seguiriya, zambra, toná, soleá and petenera. This is how Cantes Malditos was born, this special and highly atmospheric album — Nacho Serrano, ABC.
We can witness a truly exceptional musical encounter. Here petenera weds the deep-voiced electric guitars of delta blues. Zambra dances together with the lightning of storms. Tradition and noise, echoes and feedback, slide guitars, songs about death and loss, seguiriya and soleá dressed in a western mood.
The vocals are performed by Granada’s Antonio Fernández, while Pedro de Dios plays electric guitar. Two musicians of elemental force, who condensed the experience of their long careers into this “cursed” recording. The album was made in 2023 in Peligros, near Granada, with the collaboration of producer José Sánchez (“La Josefa”) and was released by Everlasting Records.
The concert is realized with the collaboration of the Embassy of Spain in Hungary.
One evening, two programs around flamenco. We present two faces of the Spanish genre, and a discounted combo ticket is available for the Világfalu+ performance and the Cantes Malditos concert! Flamenco was born in the so‑called Andalusian triangle – the poor quarters of Seville, Cadiz and Jerez de la Frontera – where the Roma sang out their pain through this music woven from Moorish, Jewish and Spanish strands. In World Village: free music university, Balázs Weyer and Alex Torres give a musical overview of the genre in the Lecture Hall. Then the flamenco evening continues in the Concert Hall with the performance of Cantes Malditos, featuring the tradition of flamenco, its dark branches, as well as noise, echoes and feedback, slide guitars, and songs about death and loss.
