A shared musical journey through the folk music of Gyergyó, Felcsík, and Gyimes
What makes Gyimes music unmistakable? How do the violin and gardon sound together, and what role did these instruments play in community life? In our interactive workshop, we’ll explore the rich folk music traditions of Gyergyó, Felcsík, and Gyimes—not only as listeners, but as active participants, too.
On our shared journey, we’ll get a glimpse into the musical worlds of these three regions and discover their distinctive melodies, rhythms, and instruments. Along the way, through short, informative stories, we’ll discuss the connection between music and dance, the occasions for traditional music-making, and the special role of the violin-and-gardon duo.
The workshop centers on the shared experience. We’ll learn simple melodies, sing together, join in the music through rhythm games, and build together the pulsating rhythms that have called communities to dance for centuries. Participants will also get a close look at the instruments and have a chance to try the gardon, experiencing firsthand the role of this unique instrument.
No musical experience is required. We welcome anyone keen to explore the folk music heritage of the Eastern Carpathians and discover how tradition can become a shared, living musical experience.
