The path of Kerekes Band from field collection trips in Hungary and Transylvania, through authentic dance houses of Moldva and Gyimes, to the world music main stages spans 30 years. During these 30 years they created a sound that is unmistakable on the Hungarian and international world music scene, and which has been recognized by the profession with numerous domestic and international awards. Chosen in 2008 as Hungary’s ambassador for the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, the band has so far performed in 33 countries, from Jamaica through Kazakhstan to Japan, and from Sweden to the United Arab Emirates. They have represented Hungary at four world expositions: in Zaragoza, Milan, Dubai and Osaka.
The 30th anniversary concert presents the full creative arc of Kerekes Band: from the beginnings rooted in authentic folk music, through the dance-house milieu and the birth of their unique Ethno Funk sound, all the way to the path leading to the main stages of international world music festivals.
During the evening, in addition to Kerekes Band’s own compositions, original folk melodies from Gyimes, the Palóc region and Somogy will also be heard. A special feature of the concert is that it offers insight into the creative process as well: it shows how an ancient pentatonic folk motif is transformed into a contemporary, energetic ethno funk composition — how tradition becomes a living, present-tense performance.
