For those who love mysterious, slightly ominous stories, the music of Carl Maria von Weber is for you! In the world of Der Freischütz, demons lurking deep in the forest and fatal spells come to life. This music is at once eerie and beautiful – as if we were listening to a romantic film score. We might say that Weber begins a sentence whose final period will be put there by Richard Wagner. The creator of the German Romantic opera was given a tragically short life. His oeuvre is not made up of operas alone; on the 200th anniversary of his death we commemorate him and can get to know some of his wonderful pieces as well!
Carl Maria von Weber is one of the key figures of early German Romanticism, a versatile artist: conductor, composer, pianist, and music critic. Richard Wagner called him “the most German of composers.” In his art, the formal world of Classicism and the means of expression of Romanticism are united in a distinctive whole. His best-known opera is Der Freischütz, one of the foundational works of German national opera, whose special feature is the linking of folk elements, depictions of nature, and the supernatural world. Orchestration plays a prominent role in Weber’s music, particularly the nuanced use of wind timbres. For him, the orchestra is not merely an accompaniment, but an active dramatic participant. In his operas the musical material is closely intertwined with the dramaturgy. The recurring motifs and atmospheric elements foreshadow the development of the later leitmotif technique. In this way he exerted significant influence on, among others, the work of Richard Wagner. Weber raised romantic mood-painting and musical characterization to a new level. The musical depiction of nature and psychological processes is particularly emphasized in his work; his sound world is almost programmatic in character.
He was a multifaceted composer; among his instrumental works, his pieces written for clarinet rank among the core works of the instrument’s literature. In these, virtuosity and lyricism both appear. Weber was also a pioneer as a conductor, especially in the conscious organization of rehearsal processes. In his art, the balance between national character and individual mode of expression can be observed. His influence extended over the entire 19th‑century German operatic tradition; without his oeuvre, the development of the Romantic opera would have taken a completely different direction. On the 200th anniversary of his death, the presenter is preparing a musical biography illustrated with masterpieces: Dóra Tápai, conductor, secondary school music teacher, and music educator at the House of Music Hungary.
