How Does One Become a Pop Star?
Conversation

This programme is held in Hungarian.
Stars have been with us for as long as we can remember. We almost take it for granted that performers appear like comets and their names become known to millions – some for longer, some for shorter periods of time – such a peculiar phenomenon this is, one we seem unable to get enough of. Yet they are “just” people too; they also started somewhere once. But what qualities do stars possess that enable them to excite so many people? When does this talent first show itself? Beyond natural gifts, what else is needed for someone to become widely known? After all, no one gets far alone; alongside them stand countless technicians, journalists, record labels, managers, and many more. And speaking of managers… when, where and how does a music industry professional notice those who will become the stars of the future? In what ways, and how, can they help shape their careers?
The conversation is prompted by the House of Music’s exhibition titled Freddie, which pays tribute to one of pop music’s most iconic pop stars, Freddie Mercury. Journalist András Stumpf interviews Ákos Dadan Kovács, an employee of one of Hungary’s largest music management companies, Gold Record, who has worked with artists such as Heaven Street Seven, Supernem, ByeAlex, Blahalouisiana, Margaret Island and Carson Coma.
