For centuries, making music was a communal experience. It is true that some artists have now “moved up” onto the stage while the audience has “moved down” into the auditorium, and it is also true that, with earphones in, we can now listen to practically any kind of music on our own—yet all of this is a relatively new development on a historical scale. Although this new fashion certainly has its own charm, in the World Village+ series we would like to return to the roots, dismantle the invisible wall between stage and audience, and draw the public into the community of music-makers.
On November 20, Ivan Curtean will visit us, who will introduce us to the dance melodies and rhythms of Moldovan-Romanian folk music and provide insight into improvisational techniques based on folk tunes and the world of traditional ornamentation. Ivan is an excellent cimbalom player who, besides demonstrating on his instrument, will also give a brief historical overview of the region’s cimbalom repertoire and its role in musical life. And who knows, perhaps the audience will also have the opportunity to take a closer look at this special instrument.
