Batyu-Fecske Club: Rhythm is Life

Zoltán Farkas “Batyu” and Ildikó Tóth “Fecske”, iconic figures of the Hungarian folk dance scene, offer their program to the attention of all those who, on the road leading to different dance styles, would like to delve a little into the level of play and creativity.

In Batyu and Fecske’s club, creative play with the basic movement–rhythm–dance techniques connected to learning the dances of the peoples of the Carpathian Basin will be the defining feature! The emphasis is always on breaking movements down to their basic elements and creatively playing with these elements in terms of rhythm, movement, and space. Their approach: playfulness and gradual progression.

These are the kinds of basic techniques we will play with (without claiming to be exhaustive): ankle-tapping steps, knocking steps, scissors steps, leg circles, accents (and rhythm exercises related to these), turning, holding–counterholding, and partner relations. If we wish, from the dance step we can arrive at dances belonging to various dance types and dance dialects, i.e. we can build them up… or not… since the finished dance itself is not really what matters, but rather the path leading to it, during which a person is touched by countless experiences, impressions, and feelings.

Zoltán Farkas “Batyu” and Ildikó Tóth “Fecske” are iconic figures of the Hungarian folk dance scene, who for decades have been authentic and passionate mediators of the traditional dance culture of the Carpathian Basin. Their art combines profound knowledge of tradition with the power of stage presence: in their performances, dance is not a museum relic but a living, breathing language. As key personalities of the Hungarian táncház (dance house) movement, they have passed on their knowledge to generations, while popularizing the rich heritage of Hungarian folk dance in many countries around the world. Their performances are at once virtuosic, personal, and captivating.
