Batyu-Fecske Club: Rhythm is Life
This programme is held in Hungarian.
Zoltán Farkas “Batyu” and Ildikó Tóth “Fecske”, iconic figures of the Hungarian folk dance scene, recommend their program to all those who would like to delve a little deeper on the level of play and creativity on the path leading to various dance styles.
In Batyu and Fecske’s club, the defining element will be creative play with the basic techniques of movement–rhythm–dance that belong to learning the dances of the peoples of the Carpathian Basin! The emphasis is always on breaking movements down into their basic elements and on creative rhythmic, movement-based, and spatial play with these basic elements. Their approach: playfulness and gradual progression.
These are the kinds of basic techniques we will play with (without claiming to be exhaustive): ankle drops, tapping steps, scissors steps, leg circles, accents (and the rhythm exercises related to these), turning, holding–counterholding, partner relationship. If we wish, from the dance step we can arrive at the dances belonging to various dance types and dance dialects, i.e. we can build them up… or perhaps not… since the finished dance itself is not what really matters, but rather the path leading to it, during which a person is touched by a wealth of experiences, impressions, and feelings.
Zoltán Farkas “Batyu” and Ildikó Tóth “Fecske” are iconic figures of Hungarian folk dance who have been authentic and passionate mediators of the traditional dance culture of the Carpathian Basin for decades. Their art combines profound knowledge of tradition with the power of stage presence: in their performances, dance is not a museum relic but a living, breathing language. As key personalities of the Hungarian dance house movement, they have passed on their knowledge to generations, while popularizing the rich heritage of Hungarian folk dance in many countries around the world. Their performances are at once virtuosic, personal, and captivating.
