Ferenc Liszt is a defining artistic genius of the 19th century, and even 140 years after his death he remains a popular composer. His works are still favorites in concert halls today, offering performers technical challenges and emotional richness, and providing listeners with a diverse musical experience. What does Liszt’s life’s work say to people today? He is a symbol of artistic freedom, innovative genius, and passionate performance, and for us Hungarians he is, at the same time, the embodiment of unwavering love of country! Let us look together at the milestones of a fantastic life journey!
Ferenc Liszt was one of the most influential composers and pianists of the 19th century, revered as a legend already in his own lifetime. His virtuoso playing revolutionized piano performance, and his concerts were genuine sensations throughout Europe. He not only broke new ground as a performer, but also as a creator: in his works he boldly fused the emotional richness of Romanticism with technical innovations. Liszt was a remarkable phenomenon: he was at once an artist, a thinker, and a cultural ambassador. He remained always proud of his Hungarian origins, and often drew on Hungarian motifs in his music. The famous Hungarian Rhapsodies, for example, are not only virtuoso pieces, but also musical imprints of his identity. During his life he visited Europe’s most important musical centers, and he was met with adoration everywhere. The term “Lisztomania” also originates from this period, when audiences literally went mad for him. At the same time, fame alone did not interest him: he taught, supported young talents, and did much for the development of musical life. In his later years he turned increasingly toward spiritual and religious themes. Liszt was not afraid to seek new paths, and for this we also honor him as a forerunner of modern music. On the 140th anniversary of his death, the performer is preparing a musical biography illustrated with masterpieces: Dóra Tápai, conductor, secondary-school music teacher, and music educator at the House of Music. On this occasion we again welcome a guest artist to the stage: pianist Márton Mikulík, who will select his program from the wonderful pieces of Liszt’s piano music.
