SISTERS WITH TRANSISTORS is the remarkable, often ignored story of the female pioneers of electronic music, talented composers whose radical experimentation redefined the boundaries of music and who democratised music-making with technological innovations, broadened access to the music industry, and fundamentally defined the way music is made and listened to today. This fascinating story narrated by Laurie Anderson, who has also performed at the House of Music, reveals before our eyes how electronic music evolved and the critical role that female artists played in its development. Featured in the film are Ciani herself, Clara Rockmore, Daphne Oram, Bebe Barron, Pauline Oliveros, Delia Derbyshire, Maryanne Amacher, Eliane Radigue and Laurie Spiegel. Set against the wider social, political and cultural context of the 20th century, this documentary compiled exclusively from archive footage presents a unique struggle for emancipation, revealing the central role of women in the history of music and society in general.
