The Koehne Quartett with John Hollenbeck performs The Gray Cottage String Quartet
On 11 February, the percussionist and songwriter John Hollenbeck will feature in Duet Behavior, a joint performance alongside the contemporary music and total arts singer, songwriter and performer Meredith Monk.
On the following day, 12 February, John Hollenbeck will team up with the Austrian Koehne Quartet for a boundary-pushing concert.
John Hollenbeck, one of the most creative drummers, percussionists and songwriters in modern music, is uniting his powers with one of Austria’s leading contemporary music groups, the Koehne Quartet, to bring the audience a show that will test the confines of genre. Hollenbeck is a Grammy-nominated composer and percussionist who made his name with pioneering projects, including GEORGE, the Claudia Quintet and the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble. His collaborations with other music icons such as Meredith Monk and Bob Brookmeyer are marked by the same qualities as his work with The Gray Cottage String Quartet: playful virtuosity and boundless creativity.
Hollenbeck masterfully combines jazz, contemporary music and various other genres as he continually seeks out new paths to create works that cannot be pigeonholed and constantly surprise both himself and his listeners. Through bold adventures in structure and sound, Hollenbeck has become one of the most highly respected and thrilling figures in contemporary music. Hollenbeck will be joined by the dynamic Koehne Quartett. The group was founded in 1987 and is known for its first-class music interpretations of contemporary music. The quartet has worked alongside Dave Liebman, Anthony Braxton and Wayne Horvitz. Their play combines the precision of classical music with the improvisational spontaneity of jazz, creating a rich and expressive sound that moves beyond conventional frameworks.
At this event, Hollenbeck will present his new string quartet collection, The Gray Cottage String Quartet, recently released as part of the Synthesis project with Ryan Truesdell as producer. The work reflects Hollenbeck’s ‘American side’, as he showcases the adventurous and improvisational spirit that defines both Hollenbeck and the Koehne Quartet. The programme schedule will also find room for various other innovative Hollenbeck compositions that further explore the intersections of jazz, contemporary music and the art of improvisation. This is the kind of evening where boundaries dissolve as the world of composed and improvised music meet in an unforgettable audio experience.
