Ti’Kaniki (RE / FRA)
Ti'Kaniki is a collective from Lyon whose members hail from both France and Réunion, people of different origins who play maloya, the traditional music of the Réunion Island. Born in the era of slavery, for ages maloya was played at secret celebrations, events where slaves would reaffirm their desire for freedom with ritual trance music. This traditional music from Réunion has a complex and painful history, and Ti'Kaniki shows us how the sound of this music, which sings of suffering but abounds with promise and hope, is created. Vocals and percussion are performed by all the band members.
