eSzínház Online: Multiculturalism in the Music of the 16-17th Century
Adventures in music with Hungary’s most entertaining and affable voice and music teacher. Not only is Árpád Tóth an excellent speaker, conductor and artist, he is also able to convince even the most timid people to emerge from their shells with his captivating presentations. On this occasion, Árpád Tóth will put the multiculturalism of centuries past under the microscope. While Europe’s relationship with exotic cultures is an old story, the thrilling mix of musical cultures can first be noted around the time of the Renaissance. How is Monteverdi’s journey to Hungary and his exploration of Turkish culture reflected in his compositions? Which composers inserted black African musical motifs into their works, and was what was long considered a form of babbling in a choral piece from di Lasso actually derived from a Nigerian dialect? What music was composed at the dawn of Baroque for indigenous American Indian lyrics, and what music was played by the famous black guitarists of 17th-century Portugal? The first meeting of dazzlingly varied cultures in the history of music.
With the purchased ticket, a recording of the concert can be viewed between 7 pm on 30 January 2025 and 11.59 pm (CET) on 4 February 2025.
This lecture is held in Hungarian.
