DOME_RE_LIVE – Tibor Szemző: Csoma Kaleidoscope DOME_RELOAD

From 14 January, the completely renovated Sound Dome will reopen with a full programme for the House of Music's unique, immersive cinematic room, where works made especially for the hemispherical screen are transformed into a true spatial experience. On the occasion of the reopening, visitors can look forward to DOME_RELOAD, an ambitious audiovisual programme series being held from 14 to 19 January. The main events include the RE_LIVE screenings, accompanied by an audience encounter, and the premiere screening of The Mysterious City Park. This time, the Sound Dome acts like a magical kaleidoscope – with the musical and acoustic space opening up in unique fashion to evoke the indescribable Himalayan experience the pilgrim/scientist Csoma had during his days among the mountains. The visual and musical world of Csoma Kaleidoscope can both be traced back to Tibor Szemző’s 2002 composition Arboretum Suite and his 2006 film The Guest of Life. This time, the Sound Dome acts like a magical kaleidoscope in which the musical and acoustic space opens up in unique fashion to evoke the indescribable Himalayan experience the pilgrim/scientist Csoma had living his days among the mountains.

“To the scholars of his generation, Csoma was an obscure figure from Transylvania, abandoned and stateless among the Himalayan mountains, but from their peaks he cast the shadow of a giant across Central Asia.” W.W. Hunter

In this work, we hear the voice of Sándor Kőrösi Csoma delivering his personal account, originally written for a certain Captain Kennedy. In it, he relates his travels and aims after being detained by the British authorities on suspicion of espionage. We will also hear from Dr Gerard, the British physician who visits Csoma in his cell, as fragments of the Hindu world filter in through the kaleidoscope of Francis Bain’s enchanting narrative. The source of the texts is Tivadar Duka’s 1885 biography on the Hungarian scholar entitled Life and Works of Alexander Csoma de Körös. The intimate, personal narrative related in Szemző’s voice is embedded in and accompanied by instrumental and vocal music that has been scored for the unique acoustic qualities of the kaleidoscope, unfolding as the images multiply in kaleidoscopic fashion in complete harmony with the sounds. The 19 movements of the performance gradually construct a full picture of Csoma, helping the audience gain a better insight of what this ‘adventure’ must have been like and experience this incomparable sense of spaciousness. Both the original English and Hungarian versions of the Csoma kaleidoscope will be presented.

Duration: 51 minutes

This screening is recommended for visitors aged 6 and above.

The language spoken in the screening is Hungarian.
