Unheard

The series titled “Hallatlan” consists of four paintings, each measuring 2m x 3m. Reflecting on the foyer of the House of Music, the images in the series show elderly women fussing around or sitting and chatting on an antique statue. The characters painted on the translucent material exist in a free space and time where no specific activity is prescribed, just like the space of visitors arriving for events. Such places that are neither home nor workplace are called “third places” in sociology: waiting rooms, streets, squares where spontaneous connections can form. The setting and context of the images are defined by the dismantled pieces of a single statue: a detail from Lucas Cranach’s 1564 painting “The Fountain of Youth,” in connection with which Eszter Szabó created a two-part drawing series in 2025 titled “To the Left and Below the Fountain of Youth.” In the present series, the elderly figures, distancing themselves from the 16th-century painting, break down an ordinary antique statue and the cultural tradition associated with it into elements and lay claim to it with their aged bodies, their provocatively (cheekily) sprawling poses, and by (re)arranging the statue’s components. The title refers to the outrageous, iconoclastic meddling carried out by these women, who are intentionally not painted in a traditionally “feminine” way. The paintings are experiments aimed at shifting stuck, ingrained concepts related to women by expanding the imaginable boundaries.
