This programme is held in Hungarian.
The Vass Lajos Chamber Choir led by Máté Szabó Sipos and the Grotesque Gymnastics company Suspended , an interdisciplinary performance narrating the Passion of Jesus Christ, combines the pure, meditative sound of Renaissance choral works and the expressive drama of improvised music with the movement vocabulary of contemporary circus. The foundation of the performance is one of the finest creations of 16th-century vocal music, Orlando di Lasso’s Stabat Mater, performed by the choir reinforced with a saxophone quartet evoking the sound of period woodwinds. Between the ten movements of the work, improvisational contemporary music interludes are inserted, which relate to the last seven words of Christ on the cross and are complemented by the playing of percussionist Ágoston Szabó Sipos. The intense mode of expression of the improvisational blocks counterpoints the restrained emotional clarity of Renaissance music. Meanwhile, the story of the Passion appears on stage through the tools of movement art and aerial acrobatics: in the choreography of Gáspár Téri and Ilka Bardóczy, the floating bodies of the acrobats, like slowly merging images, evoke the moods characteristic of icon painting in the space surrounding the choir and the musicians. Below and above, tradition and modernity, the encounters between abstract sacred spaces and the flesh-and-blood reality of the Passion all become visible and audible in this incredibly exciting performance.
For twenty years, the Vass Lajos Chamber Choir has been one of the most defining players in the Hungarian choral scene. Even outside professional institutional frameworks, the ensemble interprets musical works from its wide repertoire with professional ambition. In addition to the music of earlier eras, they are also committed to the music of the present day, as indicated by numerous world premieres. They are regular performers in the Hungarian concert life and have also achieved several victories in international competitions. Máté Szabó Sipos is a choral conductor and conductor, the originator and creator of numerous classical and stage productions based on the fusion of different art forms. He considers the musical education of young people particularly important, through interactive, modern and direct-style performances. As a guest conductor and choral conductor he appears with the most important Hungarian ensembles and accepts numerous international invitations. His work has been recognized with several awards.
Grotesque Gymnastics is a project-based collective founded in 2013 by Gáspár Téri and Ilka Bardóczy. Their shared sarcastic outlook defines the unique mood and style of the formation’s performances, in which they combine elements of contemporary circus, contemporary dance, performance art and theatre. Their most important goal is that, alongside the display of superhuman abilities in their circus performances, human fallibility and fragility should also become visible. In the company’s artistic projects, Gáspár Téri organizes the creative work and, by formulating the conceptual background of the performances, participates in developing the concept as a director-performer, while Ilka Bardóczy is the choreographer and visual designer of the swinging and aerial apparatuses.
