The Wilder Side of Life (US, 60s-70s): Velvet Underground, MC5, Iggy Pop

This programme is held in Hungarian.

While in late-1960s California hippie culture and the psychedelic rock that sprang from it were triumphant, on the East Coast of the United States some representatives of the new generation were much more fascinated by the darker, wilder side of life. In their songs they did not sing about sunshine, dreams, peace, longing for love and grass-LSD trips, but about death, hard drugs (heroin), transvestites, bisexuality, sadomasochism. Their music was characterized by an oppressive atmosphere, listlessness, dissonance and noise. The early shadows of New York (Velvet Underground) and Detroit (MC5, Stooges) were precursors of the later punk revolution. They will be the subject of the next lecture of the Rock and Roll Free University with a rock-music guided tour by Jávorszky Béla Szilárd.

A rock-history lecture series from the blues through Elvis to the seventies. At the MZH Multimedia Library and Club a regular monthly program started in 2022 under the title Rock and Roll Free University. The Rock and Roll Free University presents the most important processes and performers of international pop history. It holds that rock and roll, somewhat simplistically, is the result of a peculiar cultural-historical marriage: when the musical tradition of the black slaves brought from Africa (blues) and the musical tradition of the white settlers who emigrated from Europe (country) met and continuously mixed with each other on a third continent, America. Moreover, all this took place in a society radically transformed by technological development and the related industrialization and urbanization. In the ninth season of this series (spring 2026) we will scrutinize the social, cultural and musical events taking place in the United States at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s.

Rock and roll is, somewhat simplistically, the result of a particular cultural-historical fusion: that of when the musical traditions of Black slaves brought over from Africa met those of white settlers who had emigrated from Europe to the new world, the Americas. Moreover, all this took place in a radically transforming society, following technological progress and its associated industrialisation and urbanisation. In the second season of this series, we look at the social, cultural and musical events of the period from Elvis to the twilight of the rock and roll era in the Fifties.
