The Besh o droM band was formed suddenly; it was not preceded by market research, member recruitment, or joint rehearsals. Rather it was a kind of answer to a question that was never asked. Seemingly mismatched people mixed seemingly incompatible musical styles with feverish zeal and impatience. Two and a half decades have passed since then, yet the music has not become more predictable, more uniform, or definitively something. Instead Besh o droM has become a style and a trademark. "They have claimed the road".
For twenty-five years they have been touring the world, proving that there is a need for a band that cannot be fully categorized anywhere. Their name now stands for unbridled rhythms and a kaleidoscope of melodies, instruments treated with virtuosity, and audiences guaranteed to be cheered up and take to the dancefloor. The beloved loosening agents of folk dancers, the intellectuals' favorite conveyors of folk music, the folk musicians' envied rockers, the boldest arrangers of informants' tunes. Their tour bus has visited every petrol station in Europe, and they could recognize a large part of international airports blindfolded. They have played at the birth and at the funerals of festivals. They held the torch for young bands and took the baton from great elders. Slowly they are reaching the midpoint of their journey; their enthusiasm does not wane, they don't have to go far for a musical joke, they boldly mix musical cocktails, naturalizing seemingly incompatible flavors in such a way that the unsuspecting taster wants more and more, again and again. Twenty-five years is not the whole world, but it feels good to know that a generation has grown up for whom there was no world music without Besh o droM.
