Dániel Csengery - Gábor Dávid Németh: The Lost Moon

This program is held in Hungarian.

It is a special moment in the history of music when a piece is presented for the first time, because you can never know whether the work will stand the test of time, whether anyone will be listening to it 100–200 years from now. Premieres are therefore always tinged with a particular excitement. This performance is surrounded by similar anticipation, made all the more so by the fact that it is a musical work written for children, which is even rarer among premieres. That is why it is a particular pleasure that this occasion — true to its name — can be hosted by the House of Music (Magyar Zene Háza). The composer of the work is Csengery Dániel, whose previous piece for children won the children's opera category of Müpa's 2020 composition competition and then enjoyed great success in the repertoire. The librettist is Németh Gábor, a József Attila Award-winning Hungarian writer and a defining figure of contemporary Hungarian literary life, who summarized the story of the piece as follows: “The Lost Moon is a musical tale for children and youth that places the questions of the loneliness and sadness that weigh on us, and of reconciling with ourselves, at its center.

How can we cope with the challenges of the outside world if we feel safest mainly in our own world? What happens if, stepping out of isolation, we discover the possibility of connection? How can we let others come close to us? These are the questions Mézecske seeks to answer — a withdrawn orphan girl whose adventures we can follow across heaven and earth, through darkness and light, as she tries to find her one and only friend so far, the lost Moon. This lyrical and atmospheric tale not only offers a special musical experience, but in its deeper layers also probes the sensitive issues of searching for identity and confronting ourselves — all presented in a form accessible to a young audience.”
The sensitive interpretation of this extraordinary story will be provided by actress Júlia Huzella, and on the musical side by the Budapesti Vonósok under the baton of concertmaster János Pilz, who for decades have been important and respected figures in Hungarian concert life. We wholeheartedly hope and believe that the wonderful creators, the excellent performers, and the extraordinary story will result in a premiere that every child will later wish they had attended!
