Balaton Method (2015)

This programme is held in Hungarian.

The barely eighty-minute film is, in fact, the feature-length "closure" of the 2012 Kodály Method: while the earlier work featured a succession of non-traditional music videos by well-known formations – including Žagar, Akkezdet Phiai, Erik Sumo Band, Volkova Sisters, Turbo and Elefánt – (in director Szimler Bálint and cinematographer Rév Marcell's audiovisual project the sound and the image are created at the same moment), in Balaton Method the tracks of eighteen domestic bands – including Quimby, Middlemist Red, Elefánt, Bin-Jip, and Subscribe – can be seen and heard. Moreover, two of them – Punnany Massif and Akkezdet Phiai – composed new songs specifically for this occasion. Balaton Method is, incidentally, the first Hungarian film made using crowdfunding.

Director: Szimler Bálint

After the fresh Anglo-Saxon musical films of spring 2025 and the three feature-length documentaries of autumn 2025, Hungarians are again at the center of the Rockfilm Club's spring 2026 lineup. To start, there will be an animated film for adults based on real events (Kék Pelikan). In March we will screen Ott torony volt (a portrait film about Víg Mihály), who is a defining creator of the early-1980s domestic underground, a relaxed, funny figure who is aware of his own limitations, does not deny the shadow sides of his personality, but is able to look upon his fate with satisfaction. In April we can follow the first ten years of Bagossy Brothers Company's existence, who uniquely combine elements of pop, rock and folk. And as the conclusion of this four-part mini-series the audiovisual "project" Balaton Method, which premiered ten years ago to great success, will be shown. After the screenings, Jávorszky Béla Szilárd, the professional associate of the Popkulturális Klubkönyvtár, will converse with the films' directors.

Contemporary Hungarian film and (rock) music have been in contact practically since the late 1960s. Sometimes more intensively, sometimes more loosely, but they are essentially inseparable.  Before the screenings, Béla Szilárd Jávorszky will talk briefly about the genesis and pop-historical significance of these works, followed by a discussion with a guest film aesthetics expert on the relevant domestic and international trends.
