Playing Greek Music with Notis Georgiou

The programme is held in Hungarian.

Making music was a communal experience for centuries. It is true that some artists have by now moved up onto the stage and the audience has shifted down to the auditorium, and that by plugging something into our ears we can listen to almost any music alone — all of this is a relatively recent development in historical terms. Although this new way of doing things certainly has its own charm, in the Világfalu+ series we would like to return to the roots, tear down the invisible wall between stage and auditorium, and involve the audience in the community of musicians.

This time we visit the Mediterranean region. Our guide will be Notis Georgiou, who, although of Cypriot Greek origin, lives in Hungary and makes music with his wife, Márku Zsuzsanna, with whom they form the Dodecachordon guitar duo. Under their guidance, starting with the rhythms and dances of ancient Magna Graecia, through the tarantella that reaches back to ancient Greek traditions, we will arrive at contemporary Greek and Cypriot folk music. For example, the rebetiko, which, incidentally, with Notis’s participation became part of UNESCO World Heritage in 2017.
Anyone can join in the music according to their temperament. With rhythm playing, or even with their voice, and we are also preparing one or two handheld instruments. We will perform the pieces together so that the event is not just a concert but also a communal experience!

A new series entitled World Village+ is launching at the House of Music, which, as a companion to Balázs Weyer's educational music series World Village, focuses on playing music together in a workshop format.
