Musicians' Café - Live gypsy music at Trilla Restaurant

This programme is held in Hungarian.

Whether it’s the exhilarating melodies of Roma string orchestras or the moving tunes of bar pianists, the restaurants, pubs, and cafés of Hungarian cities have always been filled with music. Launched in the café of the House of Music, the “Musicians’ Café” series takes the audience once a month into the world of hospitality musicians. During our café evenings, the atmosphere of the restaurants of Gyula Krúdy’s era comes to life, along with the age of Pál Jávor, Antal Páger, celebrities carousing with the band, and decadent gentry. The aim of the series is to draw attention to one of our most important Hungarikums, the café gypsy music which, unfortunately, has been increasingly pushed into the background nowadays. This time, the live gypsy music will be provided by Jenő Varga and his orchestra.

We welcome our guests with a welcome drink and, in keeping with the spirit of the Musicians’ Café, it is possible to have dinner and drinks at the concert venue.

Jenő Varga

Jenő Varga began playing the violin in early childhood, at the age of just four. He undoubtedly inherited his musical sense from his father and grandfather, as both were musicians in the family. After his years of study at home, he continued his education at the Nap Street Music School, and thanks to his talent he was admitted to the Tóth Aladár Music School, where he developed under the guidance of such excellent masters as László Dénes. He was only 14 when he was admitted to the prestigious Vienna Conservatory, which opened up new horizons for him and laid the foundation for his international career. At 16 he began to focus on Hungarian “nóta” and café gypsy music. His career started at the Szeged Restaurant, and he later played, among others, at the Margitkert Restaurant and the deservedly legendary 100 Éves Étterem (“100-Year-Old Restaurant”), enchanting its guests week after week. In 2017, at the international prímás (lead violinist) competition held as an accompanying event of the annually organized Anna Ball in Balatonfüred, he won first prize by unanimous decision of the jury. Since 2023 he has been a regular invited performer on one of Duna TV’s most popular programs, “Jó ebédhez szól a nóta” (“A Tune for a Good Lunch”).
