Cafe Medrano: Perfect Day
Cafe Medrano is a new, guitar-based version of the band Cabaret Medrano. In addition to the usual Latin and jazz elements, there is more blues and rock improvisation; overall it’s a bit rougher, more alternative than its big brother. Their songs once again feature Balkan-klezmer and gypsy-tango motifs. On their debut EP released in 2024, the oriental atmosphere of the song titled Heat in the Courtyard proportionally mixes Balkan, klezmer and Arabic motifs.
The song One-Eyed Cat, on the other hand, draws from the traditions of psychedelic country blues, recalling and reflecting on the songs of Tom Waits and Lou Reed.
Cafe Medrano is a characteristically Budapest band that blends the city’s diversity in both its music and its lyrics. Scenes and moods typical of the capital also come to life in their songs: the soda vendor shouting in the street, the one-eyed cat sunbathing in the courtyard, or a vagabond who lives in a fishing cabin. The band – whose leader, Imre Kamondy, was a member of the company of the Csiky Gergely Theatre in Kaposvár for nine years and has also appeared in numerous films.
