No summer in the House of Music is complete without its own mini-festival - the first stop in the inaugural year of the Festival of Distant Cultures, launched in 2023 is South America. What does this mean? First and foremost, irresistibly good music, hot vibes and dance, in all quantities. And still first and foremost, two legendary bands from South America coming to Budapest. On Saturday (15 July), Los Wembler's de Iquitos, the psychedelic outfit that has been a staple of Peruvian chicha since the 1970s, and on Sunday (16 July), Cimarrón, one of the mainstays of Colombian yoropo, will be dancing. But outside of them, there's also guaranteed big smiles and Latin joy music from salsa to cumbia with Los Orangutantes, Los Andinos, Stefania Allstars (Salsa in the Park), Lituma and DJ Gandharva & Von Yodi.

The main attraction on Sunday, the second day, is the Colombian band Cimarrón, a genre with a very unusual sound even within Latin music, the Songlines award-winning ensemble from Joropo. Formed in 1986, Cimarrón is a Yoropo band that originated from the Colombian side of the Orinoco Plain. Joropo is a music with Venezuelan and Colombian roots, drawing on Creole traditions and Venezuelan tango, with the harp, small bladed instruments (such as the bandola, cuatro) and the maracas rhythm instrument as its characteristic instruments. Cimarrón complements this with other percussion instruments, bass and a somewhat more contemporary sound. The Latin Grammy-nominated group (Best Traditional World Music Album) has been to all the major traditional and world music festivals, was named Band of the Year in 2020 by Songlines, the most important world music magazine, after their 2019 album Orinoco, and their latest album, La Recia, released in 2022, has been well received and is considered one of the best albums in the Yoropo. In other words, we can see the band at their best, making spectacular clips and album covers, constantly moving, updating their sound and always moving and impressing the audience attending their concerts.
