The celebration of Christmas with a large-scale musical work originates from the courts of the German principalities of the Reformation era. As the first great German master of the early Baroque, Heinrich Schütz can be regarded as the starting point of these magnificent works. His Christmas oratorio weaves together passages from the Scriptures about the birth of Jesus, while characterizing the most important figures of the story with vivid musical depictions.
