Cate Le Bon (UK)
Welsh songwriter-musician-producer Cate Le Bon is an architect of sound who constantly explores unknown territories with her music; she is one of the most exciting indie rock, baroque pop, and psych-folk performers of the last twenty years. With her art-pop, avant-rock albums she enjoys the love of both critics and audiences. She will arrive for her first solo concert in Hungary with her 2025 album Michelangelo Dying; the singer-songwriter is also a renowned producer who has worked with St. Vincent, Wilco and Dry Cleaning. Cate Le Bon (born Cate Timothy, she chose her stage name after Duran Duran frontman Simon Le Bon) is a genre-defying artist who emerged in the late 2000s as one of the major talents of the Welsh scene. The singer, who performs in both English and Welsh, first appeared on the 2007 solo tour of Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys, and later featured in Rhys’s synth-pop project Neon Neon as well. She then worked with members of another key Welsh psych-pop band, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Megan Childs and Richard James – and thus launched her solo career from a high starting point, following her short-lived band The Secret Show.
As an architect of sound, she builds emotionally rich sonic landscapes out of abstraction, texture and timbre. Always different landscapes. So far Cate Le Bon has released seven studio albums, including the Mercury Prize–nominated 2019 record Reward and the critics’ darling, 2022’s Pompeii.
Her singular voice is multifaceted and always sensitive to the emotional currents that shape her art. Her production work – on Wilco’s Cousin, Horsegirl’s Phonetics On and On, and St. Vincent’s Grammy-winning All Born Screaming – clearly shows how much trust there is in her ability to transform sound worlds into intimate, unique universes.
Le Bon has also run several side projects: with the touring musicians of BANANA, with other well-known Welsh artists (Sweet Baboo, H. Hawkline), and with members of Warpaint and former Red Hot Chili Peppers players; Drinks, meanwhile, was a post-punk project with her ex-partner Tim Presley, also known as White Fence.
Her most recent, seventh album, last year’s Michelangelo Dying, was born of raw emotion and vulnerability. She transformed her breakup with Presley into a sparkling song cycle – a meditation on love, loss and the unknowable self. The song Ride even features a true Welsh legend, John Cale. At this concert, too, Le Bon invites us into a world where emotion overrides form and abstraction becomes its own particular truth.
