Secondhand Sounds (Dés András, Tilo Weber, Steve Arguelles)

The programme is held in English.

The House of Music Hungary has launched a new series entitled Boundless Rhythm, in which we aim to demonstrate the diversity of the world of drums and percussion instruments and how it is possible to create complete music using only these instruments. At the third event in the Boundless Rhythm series, András Dés and his friends, Tilo Weber from Germany and Steve Arguelles from the UK, will play with sound generators and percussion instruments brought in by the audience at an event entitled Secondhand Sounds.

The essence of Secondhand Sounds' unique concept is that the audience, rather than the musicians participating in the concert, will be responsible for providing the instruments. We ask them to bring used or discarded items from home that can be given a new role on stage and become musical instruments. The evening is both a modern ritual and a musical adventure, in which the audience also becomes an active participant through the objects they bring. It is difficult to predict what new emotional and meaning layers will be added to a musical process in which objects carrying personal stories become the sources of the music being created.

The first part of the evening is about building a special "instrument park": the guests hand over their objects to the musicians and maybe share stories about them. For the audience, these objects are a personal connection to the music, and for the musicians, they're exciting sound sources waiting to be discovered. Since the musicians have no idea what "instruments" they will be playing that evening, the music will also be created from scratch, on the spot, during a performance that freely uses space and time.

András Dés, who lives in Vienna, Tilo Weber from Berlin, and Steve Argüelles from Paris are experimental, path-finding musicians for whom such spontaneous and creative situations represent the most joyful moments of music-making. The encounter between the objects brought by the Budapest audience and the three artists goes against traditional concert formats: it promises a unique and unrepeatable evening celebrating the power of human relationships.
