At the heart of the story is Pál Futaki, a self-proclaimed pub bard eking out an existence amid the smoky surroundings of the Kapufa Tavern on the edge of town. But one evening, the Devil walks into the suburban café and challenges him to a game of chance: if Pál wins, he can be freed from his hopeless life; if he loses, his soul will belong to the Devil. With no better plans, Pál accepts the challenge—for what does someone have to lose who takes on the Devil not to survive or win glory, but simply out of boredom, for the fun of the game? The consequences, however, affect not only him but also his former love and those around him, and it gradually becomes clear that more is at stake than he had imagined.
Futaki Pál és az Ördög (Pál Futaki and the Devil) is a multidisciplinary performance in which poetry, music and unconventional theatrical techniques all play equally important roles. A darkly humorous, ballad-like and playful epic, a musical tragicomedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously, even when tackling serious questions. Rather than moralising, it plays with ideas of fate, choice and responsibility, while creating its own dreamlike world through grotesque and absurd devices.
The production’s creative team represents an experimental strand of contemporary Hungarian theatre and literature. Our aim is to use a shared language emerging at the intersection of poetry, music and theatre to create exciting, modern frameworks for the morality play genre. The piece is thus both a tribute to Hungarian alternative visual and music culture and a fresh, experimental reading of its legacy.
