Marc Ribot: Solo Guitar Improvisations (USA)
Marc Ribot: Solo Guitar Improvisations (USA)
How could we succinctly describe Marc Ribot, this American guitarist born in 1954, who has left a lasting mark on so many things from avant-garde jazz to experimental rock to free improvisational music? And who has collaborated with hundreds of artists from Tom Waits to Laurie Anderson to Norah Jones, contributing to over five hundred (!) albums! Let's just say he's one of the great guitar geniuses of the New York underground, who, while exploring extremes, always remains a lovable, introverted figure. This time we'll see him solo in Hungary, on an evening where only one thing is certain: we are guaranteed a memorable concert.
It is truly impossible to even begin to describe Marc Ribot's career and style in such a short introduction. Because from extreme noise to the boldest improvisations and the most beautiful guitar circles, he is capable of anything. Because surprisingly, we can also hear his playing on pop albums by artists like Tanita Tikaram, Tricky, or Elton John. Because John Zorn and John Laurie call him if they want to go a little crazy with music. Because Elvis Costello also regularly works with him. He has performed with Chuck Berry, Wilson Pickett - and he has worked with Robert Plant. Marianne Faithfull, Beth Orton, Neko Case? They all called him to play! Or should we call finer circles for a slow dance? Diana Krall, Cassandra Wilson, Madeleine Peyroux? They also requested his talent. And did he play on one of the best albums of recent years, the 2022 masterpiece De Todas Las Flores by Mexican Natalia Lafourcade? Yes! And we haven't even mentioned his versatile solo work and bands. It really is unnecessary to continue. Since his distorted guitar first appeared on Tom Waits' 1985 outstanding album Rain Dogs (and he has, of course, been Waits' constant guitarist since then), the world has known him as one of the true greats of the instrument. He has already performed several times in Hungary, but he is definitely one of those artists one can never get enough of. And for those who haven't seen and heard him yet...
