The Kings of the Keys: From Bach to Freddie Mercury

This programme is held in Hungarian.

In 1732, the first prototype of the piano in the modern sense, the hammerklavier, was completed. J. S. Bach tried out the instrument, and as a result the two volumes of Das Wohltemperiertes Klavier were born. From that moment on, the history of the piano has been one of continuous development: in every era an exceptional creator appears who enriches the instrument with new sounds and roles. Who were the kings of the keys? We get the answer with the guidance of Domonkos Váray as we journey through the different musical periods – all the way to the piano-centered world of Freddie Mercury.

Every period in music history has its own stars: outstanding performers and composers who created something lasting on their instrument. But who are they if we scrutinize the development of the piano? Starting from Johann Sebastian Bach – Domenico Scarlatti, Beethoven and Chopin, then Bartók, Gershwin and Duke Ellington – all of them created new genres and styles, or brought forth their own unmistakable musical worlds. The piano has also taken a central role in popular entertainment music, and today perhaps the term “keyboard instrument” most accurately describes this versatile world. Freddie Mercury’s classical musical education was also extremely broad, and he himself gladly sat down at the instrument. In connection with the exhibition of the Freddie era, we examine the role and development of the piano. Our guest instrumental artist will also help with this: Domonkos Váray, who is not appearing on the stage of the House of Music Hungary for the first time. The 14-year-old talent is already the winner of numerous prestigious music competitions and moves confidently in both the classical and jazz worlds. He is the first prize winner of the National Piano Competition of Nyíregyháza and the first prize winner of the Szakcsi Jazz Memorial Fest, and has already made his debut as a composer. The presenter of the evening, Dóra Tápai – conductor, music teacher, and music educator at the House of Music Hungary – sheds light on the curiosities and connections. What can you expect? A good atmosphere, exciting stories, and great music.
